Y2K problem

Y2K stands for year, 2000 (k=1000). Y2K is the name given to the problem of revising all computer hardware technology and software data and algorithm with the onset of the year 2000. The Y2K problem had arisen due to the use of a six digit figure to represent dates till recently. From the year 2000 eight digits will be required. The corporate world, the accountants, the service sector and the taxmen had the job to evolve methods of the conversion, cost involved and their treatment in the Balance Sheetand for tax purpose.

A typical change agent – aggressive and impatient of status quo. An extremist and a zealous advocate of a cause.

Yield-gap

The difference between the yield of a particular share or security and the standard yield from low-risk or risk free long term bond.

Yield

1) The dividends or interest paid to shareholders, expressed as a percentage of the current price of the security in question. 2) An output that stems from an input. 3) The productivity ratio where the numerator is the output or gain and the denominator is the effort or investment.

Yellow-dog contract

A contract entered into by a worker with his employer whereby the worker agrees not to be the member of a union, if employed. A token of surrendering democratic rights under duress.

An efficient way of tackling market opportunities including shifts in technology and social changes.

Year-round

Thuoughout the year. As distinct from seasonal or activities undertaken at intervals or from time to time.

Year-end dividend

An extra dividend paid at the end of the financial year. This is in addition to the interim dividend that is often paid by profit-making companies.
